I am very surprised, and flattered, that a handful of people have said something about the banning. Let me clear up a few things
First, Brian has unblocked me. He didn't need to but he did and to be honest I was surprised after an email that I sent him commenting (that is me being polite towards myself) on how he ran the board. My contention was that I felt the banning was very selective. His Terms of Use, as applied to me, were over what was being seen as advertising. It was my opinion that so many others have been shoving ads on the board that by me creating a website comparison sheet was not only appropriate but was not an advertisement. Even after all that has been said over the past few days Phillip has still posted about his site in an attempt to refer others to him. I have no problem with Phillip doing that, even though it annoys the hell out of me, but his posts have always managed to stay online whereas mine were being deleted as fast as I posted them. Then he says things like “Gregg, I thought we were friends?” For awhile there I was posting just to see how long it would take to have it removed. Second, I said I was going to tone things down with respect to Phillip. Call it a gesture if you will but then I see he posted a message to Brian where he said “i have never used any profanity, ever, in this forum both boss and gregg have” Yes, I have used profanity but only towards Phillip. I thought it was “catty” [get it…Katz?]of him to go to the trouble to point this out to Brian. It was little a little kid ratting out his sister. Third, the reason for the ban was not because of foul language. It came from me posting a link where I compared the sites that I sell to Brian, Phillip and Media99. Brian did email me saying that the information I listed on my comparison sheet was not accurate. He emailed me a list of changes, some of which I put online, but others I did not. I sent Brian an email stating that I was attempting to compare all of the sites and asked if Brian would email me a single URL of a site that he made so I could use it in the comparison. I have yet to hear back from him. I also emailed Media99 and gave them the link to the comparison for their input. They asked to not be listed. I have decided to leave the comparison as is even if some of the others prefer it not to be online. Does it paint a picture a certain way? Maybe it does but I have told everyone listed that I would change it to reflect accuracy. If someone has features that I left off then I would correct it as well. I do comparisons all over my site by pointing out to the customer how much money they save when they shop with us. A few years ago I did a pop-up window that showed customers how much they saved compared to other local stores. That pissed off another florist who ran to his attorney. My attorney explained that comparison pricing was legal. Fast food chains do it all the time.
Fourth, why does it matter so much if someone advertises? Isn’t it up to the people that read the posts to decide if they want to buy into it? I know the condition exists because Brian has indicated that it directly conflicts with what he does regarding the selling and hosting of web sites but isn’t competition supposed to be good for everyone? Since I have posted on this board I have only sold one web site to a FB reader, which was Shane at MarketplaceFlowers.com. When Shane posted a message, without even putting his or my URL in, it got deleted and we both got banned. Neither of us did anything wrong but it was the fact that the post had something positive to say over something I had done for another florist. I am not looking to steal business from Brian. I am looking to make money doing what I do, which is making florist web sites. I do not do floral design and as many recall I only took over our store 7 years ago when it got dumped on me. Can I be a jackass and fight with others or instigate something? Sure and I have before and have often regretted it because it showed a side of me that I would prefer not seen. But sometimes it is easy to get on this post, read and post and slam away. I have done it myself.
Finally, my problem with Phillip is that he just does not seem to take “stop” to heart. How many times has a post gone up that he immediately jumps on with a link to his site? That should be easy to count up since his posts do not get deleted. But I will say this. I may only be 7 years in this business but I have never tried to shove my way of thinking down someone’s throat or tell them that the way they are doing things is wrong with respect to how they run their business. I didn’t appreciate Phillip posting how he knew I had a bad business year and that I had wished it had been better because he had no idea how my business year was. 2004 wasn’t bad for me because of business. It was almost all personal stuff.
